Abstract:
The Hang Seng Bank, a part of the HSBC group, is one of the largest banks in Hong Kong. Hang Seng forayed into the Chinese market during the mid-1980s by opening up a representative office in Shenzhen. It began to expand its operations in China from the late-1990s after the Chinese government relaxed regulations pertaining to the entry of foreign financial institutions in China. By 2004, Hang Seng had branches in Shanghai, Fuzhou, Guangzhou and Nanjing.
Pedagogical Objectives:
- To discuss the expansion strategies implemented by the Hang Seng Bank to establish itself in China before the Chinese banking sector is opened up in 2006 as per the World Trade Organisation norms.
